10-Day Morocco Itinerary: Cities, Desert & Mountains

Von MET Team29 July 202613 Min. Lesezeit

Ten days is enough to link Morocco's two great imperial cities with the Sahara and the High Atlas. Here is the classic Marrakech-to-Fes loop, day by day, with honest driving times and where to slow down.

Ten Days, the Whole Country

Ten days is the length we recommend most often for a first trip to Morocco. It is the point where the country stops being a single city break and becomes a proper journey: two imperial cities with a thousand years of history between them, a night in the Sahara, the great mountain passes of the High Atlas, and the palm oases and gorges of the south — all linked in one loop that rarely doubles back on itself.

If you have less time, our 7-day itinerary keeps Marrakech and the Sahara and drops the north. If you're still deciding, start with how many days you need in Morocco. This plan assumes you want to see it all and do it as an overland loop — the way the country is meant to be travelled.

Days 1–2 — Marrakech

Begin in the red city. Day one is arrival and an easy first evening in the medina; day two is a full guided exploration — the Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, the souks, the tanneries, and the theatre of Djemaa el-Fna after dark. Our Marrakech medina cultural tour makes sense of the maze. End with a hammam. (If you want a day-trip breather before the long desert drive, the Ourika Valley or Ouzoud Waterfalls both work.)

Day 3 — Marrakech to the Dades Valley

Cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, stopping at the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou — the earthen citadel from *Gladiator*, *Game of Thrones* and countless others (more on Morocco's film locations). Continue to Ouarzazate, "the door of the desert," and overnight in the rose-coloured Dades Valley among the kasbahs.

Day 4 — Todra Gorge to Merzouga & the Dunes

Walk into the Todra Gorge, where 300 m cliffs close over a cold river, then drive east through oasis towns to Merzouga and the great Erg Chebbi dunes. Late afternoon, ride camels out to a desert camp for sunset, dinner and drumming under a sky with no light pollution. Our 3-day Sahara tour is built around this leg. Read what a Sahara camp night is really like before you go.

Day 5 — Sahara Sunrise, North Through the Ziz Valley to Fes

Sunrise over the dunes, then the long, beautiful drive north to Fes — up the Ziz Valley, past the ksour and palm groves, over the Middle Atlas through the cedar forests around Ifrane (watch for Barbary macaques). It's a big day, but one of the most scenically varied of the whole trip. Overnight in Fes. This whole Marrakech-to-desert-to-Fes traverse is exactly what our 3-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour covers.

Days 6–7 — Fes

Give Fes two nights — it deserves them. Fes el-Bali, the old walled city, is the largest car-free urban area in the world and the spiritual and cultural heart of Morocco: the Al-Qarawiyyin (the world's oldest continually operating university), the medieval tanneries, the madrasas, and a medina even more labyrinthine than Marrakech's. A local guide is close to essential here. Fes is a working city of artisans, not a museum — a full day and a half lets you feel that rather than just tick it.

Day 8 — Fes Back Toward the Atlas

Turn south and west again. Depending on your flights, this is the day to break the return: either back over the Middle Atlas toward Marrakech, or via Meknes and the Roman ruins of Volubilis if you want one more layer of history. Overnight en route.

Day 9 — The High Atlas / Imlil

Slow the pace before the end with a day in the mountains proper. From the Marrakech side, the Imlil valley below Mount Toubkal is the classic base — terraced villages, walnut groves, and Berber hospitality. Walk as much or as little as you like; even a half-day hike here is a world away from the cities. Hikers who want the real thing can build in a summit attempt (see our 2-day Toubkal climb).

Day 10 — Marrakech, Last Morning, Departure

Back to Marrakech for the final morning — souks for gifts, a last rooftop breakfast, the Jardin Majorelle — then the airport. Ten days, both imperial cities, the Sahara, and the Atlas, in one clean loop.

The Honest Version

  • Do it as a loop, not out-and-back. The whole efficiency of a 10-day trip comes from never retracing the same road twice.
  • Two nights in Fes, not one. It's the single most common regret — people give Fes a rushed night and wish they'd stayed. Build it in.
  • The two long driving days are the desert-in and the desert-to-Fes legs. They're scenic, but they're real. A driver-guide is worth it.
  • You can fly out of Fes instead of looping back to Marrakech if your flights allow — it saves a day of driving. Ask us and we'll plan it either way.

Build Your 10 Days

This is the classic loop, but the best version is the one shaped around you — a luxury desert camp, more hiking, a cooking class in Fes, a slower pace with kids. We run this as a private, custom itinerary with certified Berber guides and no fixed-coach rush.

👉 See our multi-day tours or message us with your dates and we'll build the full 10 days around your pace and interests.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days enough to see Morocco?
Ten days is the ideal length for a first, comprehensive trip: enough to link both great imperial cities (Marrakech and Fes) with a proper Sahara night and time in the High Atlas, without living in the car. It's the length we most often recommend. With only seven days you'd drop Fes and the north — see our [7-day Morocco itinerary](/en/blog/7-day-morocco-itinerary) — and with two weeks you'd add the Atlantic coast and a serious trek.
What is the best route for 10 days in Morocco?
The classic and most efficient shape is a loop, not a back-and-forth: Marrakech → over the Atlas to the Sahara → up through the gorges and oases to Fes → and back to Marrakech (or fly out of Fes). Doing it as a loop means you rarely retrace your steps, and each day brings new scenery. This itinerary follows that loop.
How much driving is in a 10-day Morocco itinerary?
The two longest days are Marrakech to the desert (over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, broken by Aït Ben Haddou) and the desert up to Fes (through the Ziz Valley and the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas). Both are full but genuinely scenic days. The city days in Marrakech and Fes involve almost no driving. A private driver-guide turns the long legs into part of the trip rather than dead time.
Should I fly between cities or drive in Morocco?
For this loop, drive — the landscapes between the cities (the Atlas passes, the gorges, the oases, the Sahara) are half the point, and you'd miss all of it flying. Flying only makes sense if you're short on time and treating Marrakech and Fes as separate city breaks. For a 10-day trip that wants the whole country, the overland loop is the right call.
