What a Toubkal guide actually costs

Let us give you the number first, because most pages bury it: for a **standard two-day

Toubkal ascent, a licensed mountain guide costs roughly 400–700 MAD per day** (about

£30–55 / €35–65 / $40–75) when you hire one directly at Imlil. Over a two-day trip that is

usually 800–1,400 MAD (£65–110 / €75–130) for the guide alone, split between everyone

in your group.

That is the guide's fee only. It is not the price of the trek. The rest of this guide

Why there is a legal minimum at all

A licensed guide is not optional on Toubkal. Guides are certified by the Moroccan Ministry

of Tourism, and there is a checkpoint at Imlil that enforces it. We wrote about the rule and

Certification takes real training — mountain safety, first aid, navigation, and the exam

that comes with it. It is a profession, not a side job. When you see a rate well below the

range above, you are almost always looking at someone unlicensed, and on a 4,167 m mountain

that is a bad place to save 200 dirhams.

The full cost breakdown

Here is everything a two-day trip actually involves. Prices are typical 2026 rates and vary

with season and group size.

A realistic all-in total for two people organising it themselves: roughly

2,600–4,200 MAD (£210–340 / €245–390) for the pair, depending on season and how much

you negotiate. Per person that lands not far from a packaged price — which surprises people.

Why the totals converge

When travellers compare a package price against "just hiring a guide," they usually compare

the guide's day rate against the whole package. That is not the same thing.

includes the licensed guide, the refuge night, all meals on the mountain, the mule for group

gear, park fees, and the round-trip transfer from Marrakech. Assembled separately, those

same components land in a similar range once the transfer and refuge are paid for. The

difference is who does the assembling, who carries the risk if the refuge is full, and

whether anyone answers the phone when the weather turns.

Both are legitimate choices. If you enjoy organising and you have time in Imlil, do it

yourself. If you have a fixed weekend and want it handled, book it.

Where the money actually goes

This is the part worth knowing. Booking platforms charge operators 25–40% commission.

On a €210 trek that is up to €84 leaving Morocco entirely — it does not reach the guide,

the muleteer, the refuge, or the family running the trip.

That is the honest argument for booking direct with any Moroccan operator, not only us:

more of what you pay stays with the people on the mountain. When you hire a guide face to

Seasonal and group-size effects

Winter costs more. From roughly November to March the summit is a snow climb needing

crampons and an ice axe, and guides charge more for winter conditions because the

Bigger groups pay less each. The guide fee, the mule and the transfer are all per-trip,

not per-person. Four friends walking together pay roughly half per head what a couple pays.

It is the single biggest lever on your cost.

Peak weeks are tighter. Spring and early autumn fill the refuge quickly. Booking late

does not usually raise the guide's rate, but it can leave you without a bed.

What "cheap" usually means

If a quote comes in far under these ranges, one of these is normally true: the guide is not

licensed; the refuge night is not included; meals are not included; the transfer is not

included; or the group will be much larger than advertised. None of those is automatically a

scam — but ask directly which of them applies, and get the answer before you pay a deposit.

Tipping

Tipping is customary and genuinely appreciated, not compulsory. As a rough guide, **10–15%

of the trip cost**, split between the guide and the muleteer, with a little more if

conditions were hard or the guide turned a difficult day around. Cash, in dirhams, at the

end.
