One week is enough to see the best of Morocco — the imperial city, the High Atlas, and a night under the Sahara stars — if you plan the route well. Here is the 7-day itinerary we'd give a friend.
One Week, the Real Morocco
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Morocco. It is long enough to feel three completely different worlds — the sensory overload of an imperial city, the green quiet of the High Atlas, and a silent night on the edge of the Sahara — without turning the holiday into a driving marathon. The trick is not trying to see everything. It is choosing one strong loop and doing it well.
This is the itinerary we would actually give a friend flying into Marrakech for a week. It uses Marrakech as a base for the first stretch, then heads out on the classic two-night desert route and loops back. If you have more time, the natural extension is our 10-day Morocco itinerary, which adds Fes and the imperial cities of the north.
Not sure a week is right for you? Start with how many days you need in Morocco.
Day 1 — Arrive in Marrakech, Ease Into the Medina
Fly in, drop your bags at a riad inside the medina walls, and don't over-plan the first evening. Marrakech rewards a slow start: mint tea on a rooftop, a first wander through the nearer souks, and dinner as the Djemaa el-Fna square fills with smoke, music and food stalls after dark. Jet lag plus the intensity of the medina is a lot on arrival day — a gentle evening is the right call.
Day 2 — Marrakech Medina, Properly
Give the city a full, guided day. The medina is genuinely disorienting on your own, and a local guide turns a stressful maze into a story: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the tanneries, and the working souks where craftspeople still hammer brass and dye leather. Our Marrakech medina cultural tour covers exactly this ground with someone who can read the city for you. In the afternoon, slow down for a hammam — the traditional steam-and-scrub is the correct way to end a day on your feet.
Day 3 — High Atlas Day Trip (Ourika or Imlil)
Trade the city for the mountains. Ninety minutes from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley climbs into green terraces, Berber villages and the Setti Fatma waterfalls — an easy, beautiful day hike and a complete change of air. If you'd rather walk toward real peaks, the Imlil side sits below Mount Toubkal and is the trailhead for the serious treks. Either way you're back in Marrakech by evening, having seen the landscape most day-trippers miss.
Day 4 — Marrakech Over the Atlas to the Dades Valley
The desert leg begins. Today is the long, spectacular drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), the High Atlas road that separates the green north from the arid south. You stop at Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen kasbah that has stood in for ancient Egypt, Jerusalem and Westeros on screen — see our guide to Morocco's UNESCO film locations. You overnight around Ouarzazate or the rose-red Dades Valley, deep in kasbah country.
Day 5 — Dades to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi Dunes
More of Morocco's great southern scenery: the Todra Gorge, where cliffs rise 300 m over a narrow river, and the long run east through date-palm oases to Merzouga. In the late afternoon you swap the vehicle for camels (or a 4x4) and ride out into the Erg Chebbi dunes — the tall, classic Sahara most people picture — to a desert camp. Dinner around a fire, drumming under the stars, and a silence you can hear. This is the night the whole trip is built around; our 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech is designed around exactly this experience. For what a camp night is really like, read the Sahara, what to expect.
Day 6 — Sunrise Over the Dunes, Then West
Wake before dawn for the sunrise over Erg Chebbi — worth every minute of the early alarm as the dunes turn from grey to gold. After breakfast at camp, the long drive back west begins, usually via a different route (the Draa Valley or back over the Atlas) so you're not retracing the whole way. It's a big day in the car, broken by stops, arriving back in Marrakech or a kasbah stop for the final night.
Day 7 — Last Morning in Marrakech, Departure
Use the last morning for whatever you didn't fit: a final souk run for gifts, the Jardin Majorelle, a rooftop breakfast, or simply another mint tea. Then the transfer to the airport. Seven days, three landscapes, and the real texture of the country rather than a checklist.
The Honest Version of This Plan
A few things the glossy versions won't tell you:
- The desert is far. Days 4–6 involve real driving. That's the price of a genuine Sahara night from Marrakech, and it's worth it — but go in knowing it, and let a driver-guide handle the long roads.
- Don't add Fes to a 7-day trip unless you cut the desert. Trying to do Marrakech + Sahara + Fes + the north in a week means you'll spend it in transit. That's what the 10-day itinerary is for.
- Private beats fixed-schedule for a route like this. You control the stops and the pace.
Make It Yours
This is a template, not a rulebook. Families slow it down and swap the summit hikes for gentler valley walks; couples add a luxury desert camp; hikers give the Atlas two days instead of one. We build this exact week as a private, custom itinerary around your dates, pace and interests.
