Why this route costs more per day

The 2-day and 4-day summit routes stay inside the refuge network — Imlil to the Toubkal

Refuge and back. Beds exist, meals are served, and the mule carries gear between two

fixed points.

The circuit leaves that network. It crosses to Lac d'Ifni, the only permanent lake in

the High Atlas, and works round the southern side of the massif through valleys with no

refuge infrastructure. That changes the bill:

Five nights split across refuges, gîtes and camping is genuinely harder to arrange

independently than five nights in one refuge, and it is where most self-organised

attempts at this route come unstuck.

What you actually get for the extra days

The summit routes are about one objective: the top of Toubkal. The circuit is about the

massif — the high passes, the southern valleys, the lake, and villages that see a

fraction of the traffic Imlil does.

Ifni sits in a rock bowl below the southern face, reached over a pass at altitude. Most

people who climb Toubkal never see it, because the standard route goes up and back down

the same valley.

Group size, again, is the lever

costs. Beds and meals are per-person. A group of four splits the substantial fixed cost

of a supported camping trek four ways rather than two.
