What Does a 3-Day Sahara Tour from Marrakech Cost? (2026)

Por MET Team1 August 20267 min de lectura

A 3-day Merzouga trip is the most-booked desert route in Morocco, and the most variable in price. Here is what separates a €95 shared minibus from a €245 private 4x4 — and which difference actually matters.

The price range is the story

A 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is advertised anywhere between about €95 and €250.

That is a wider spread than any other Moroccan itinerary, and it is not because some

operators are greedy. It is because "3-day Sahara tour" describes four quite different

products.

Our 3-day Sahara tour is €245 per person.

The single biggest driver is the vehicle. A shared minibus splits the fuel and driver

across sixteen people; a private 4x4 splits it across your group. Everything else is

smaller by comparison.

What the distance means

Merzouga is roughly 560 km from Marrakech, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Days one and

three are genuinely driving days — that is not a flaw in the itinerary, it is geography.

What varies is how the driving is broken up. The route passes Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate,

the Dades and Todra gorges and the Draa palm groves. A rushed trip photographs them

through a window; a slower one stops. If you would rather have more dune time and less

road, the 4-day route at €360 adds a night and a

gentler pace.

The questions worth asking before you book

Cheap is not automatically bad. Undisclosed is bad. Ask:

1. Private or shared vehicle? — and if shared, how many seats.

2. What kind of camp? Private or shared bathrooms; tent or room.

3. Are lunches included? Usually not, on any operator. Budget 60–120 MAD each.

4. How many people in the group?

5. Is the second night a camp or a hotel?

Any operator worth booking answers all five directly. If the answers are vague, that is

the information you needed.

What is not included on our trip

  • Lunches on days 1 and 3 — roadside stops, typically 60–120 MAD
  • Personal expenses and tips — 10–15% for the driver-guide and camp staff is customary

Everything else — private transport, the sunset camel ride, the luxury camp with dinner

and breakfast, the hotel night, the desert guide and sandboarding equipment — is in the

price.

Which desert, though?

Erg Chebbi at Merzouga is the classic dune sea and the one most 3-day tours target. It is

not the only option, and the alternatives cost differently: Zagora is closer and cheaper

but the dunes are smaller; Erg Chegaga is wilder and further; Agafay is a stony desert an

hour from Marrakech, good for a night but not a Sahara substitute. We compare them in

Agafay vs Merzouga vs Zagora.

Where the money goes

Booking platforms take 25–40% commission. On a €245 tour that is up to €98 leaving

Morocco — more than the camp and the camel handlers earn between them. Direct booking with

any Moroccan operator keeps it with the people running the camp.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech cost?
Prices range from roughly €95 for a shared minibus with a basic camp to €245 for a private 4x4 with a luxury camp. Our [3-day Sahara tour](/en/tours/sahara-3day-marrakech) is €245 per person and includes private transport, the sunset camel ride, one night in a luxury desert camp with dinner and breakfast, one hotel night, a desert guide and sandboarding equipment.
Why are some Morocco desert tours so cheap?
The savings come from four places, and it is worth knowing which: a shared 16-seat minibus rather than a private vehicle; a basic camp with shared bathrooms rather than private ones; lunches excluded on both driving days; and a larger group, which means more stops and less flexibility. None of that is dishonest if disclosed — ask which applies before paying.
Is the 3-day Sahara tour enough time?
It is the shortest itinerary that reaches Erg Chebbi properly. Merzouga is about 560 km from Marrakech, so days one and three are substantially driving days, with the desert night in between. If you want more time in the dunes rather than the car, the [4-day route](/en/tours/desert-4day-marrakech) adds a night and a slower pace.
What is not included in a 3-day desert tour?
On our trip, lunches on days one and three, plus personal expenses and tips. Lunches on the road are typically 60–120 MAD each at the roadside restaurants the route uses. Tips for the driver-guide and camp staff are customary at around 10–15%.
