Those two numbers are closer than most people expect, and the reason is worth

understanding before you decide which way to book.

Why the two-day trip has four bills, not one

The mistake almost everyone makes is comparing a package price against a guide's

day rate. They are not the same thing. A Toubkal ascent has four separate costs,

and the guide is only the largest of them.

Over two days that comes to roughly 1,000–1,600 MAD for the guide, 500–600 for the

mule, 300–350 for the refuge night, and 600–1,000 for the return transfer.

Where the group-size lever actually bites

This is the part that changes the arithmetic most, and it is why a per-person price

can be misleading.

The guide fee, the mule and the vehicle are all charged per trip. The refuge bed

and the meals are charged per person. So the fixed costs — which are the majority

of the bill — divide by however many of you there are.

Two people split roughly 2,100–3,200 MAD of fixed cost between them. Four people

split the same fixed cost four ways and each pay noticeably less. If you are weighing

whether to find two more walkers, this is the single biggest saving available to you,

larger than any negotiation on the guide's rate.

What "cheap" usually means on Toubkal

If a quote lands well under these ranges, one of these is normally true: the guide is

not licensed; the refuge night is not included; meals are not included; the transfer

from Marrakech is not included; or the group will be much larger than advertised.

None of those is automatically a scam. But ask which one applies before you pay a

deposit, and get the answer in writing.

The two-day versus four-day question

The 2-day is €210 per person; the 4-day is €380.

Not double, because the guide, mule and transfer are per-trip costs spread over more

days.

What the extra money actually buys is acclimatisation. The 2-day takes you from

Marrakech at 450 m to 4,167 m in about thirty hours. That works for fit walkers and

plenty of people summit that way, but altitude is the most common reason a Toubkal

What is not in the package

Worth budgeting separately:

• Travel insurance — mandatory on our trips, and sensible on any 4,167 m mountain. Check it covers trekking to altitude, not just standard travel.

Where the money goes

Booking platforms charge operators 25–40% commission. On a €210 trek that is up to

€84 leaving Morocco entirely — money that never reaches the guide, the muleteer, the

refuge, or the family running the trip.
