Essaouira is two hours north of Agadir and one of Morocco's most magical cities. Blue boats, ancient ramparts, fresh seafood, and the constant Atlantic wind. Here is how to make the most of a day trip.
Why Essaouira Is Worth the Drive
Essaouira (Swiri in Berber, or "the wind" in Tamazight) is one of the most distinctive cities in North Africa. A fortified medina on the Atlantic coast, it combines whitewashed walls, blue fishing boats, crashing ocean waves, and a genuinely multicultural history — Berber, Arab, Jewish, Portuguese, and French layers visible on every street.
The city's fortifications are often assumed to be Portuguese, and there is a real reason for the confusion: Portugal did hold a fort at this exact site in the 16th century. But the medina and ramparts you actually walk today are younger and different in origin — built in the 1760s under Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah, designed by Théodore Cornut, a French military architect and mathematician who applied European bastion-fortification principles (the same tradition used at Saint-Malo in France) to a purpose-built Moroccan royal port. The result is one of the earliest examples in Africa of European military engineering used in service of a North African monarchy rather than a colonial power, and it is why Essaouira's grid-planned streets feel distinctly different from the organic, winding medinas of Marrakech or Fes.
Unlike Marrakech's medina, Essaouira's old town is relaxed. Touts are rare. The pace is slow. The light is extraordinary — Atlantic silver bouncing off white walls and blue painted doors.
Getting There from Agadir

What to See in Essaouira
The Skala du Port (Sea Bastion)
The most iconic image of Essaouira — the 18th-century sea walls with their line of bronze Portuguese cannons pointing at the Atlantic. The light here at any time of day is exceptional. Go early if you want the rampart walk without crowds.
The Blue Fishing Harbour
Immediately below the sea walls, the working harbour is a riot of colour — blue-painted wooden boats, fishing nets spread to dry, seagulls, and the smell of the morning catch. Arrive before 11:00 am when the fishing boats are still coming in.
The Medina Souks
Essaouira's souks are notably less aggressive than Marrakech's — you can browse in relative peace. The city is famous for:
- Thuya woodwork — intricate furniture and objects made from Moroccan thuya root, unique to Essaouira
- Berber silver jewellery — good quality at fair prices in the Mellah (former Jewish quarter)
- Argan cosmetics — you are at the source of Morocco's argan production here
The Mellah (Jewish Quarter)
Essaouira had a historically significant Jewish population through the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Mellah district retains Hebrew inscriptions above doorways and the synagogue at its centre.
The Beach
Essaouira's 3-km beach stretches south from the medina walls. The consistent Atlantic wind makes this one of the top kitesurfing and windsurfing locations in Africa — spectacular to watch even if you are not participating. The beach is flat, wide, and backed by sand dunes.
Where to Eat
Harbour seafood stalls (Lunch, budget): The line of grill stalls at the harbour entrance is the iconic Essaouira experience. Point at the fish you want, they grill it on the spot, you eat at a plastic table watching the boats. Sardines, sea bass, prawns. Lunch for two: 80–120 MAD.
Taros Café (Lunch, mid-range): Rooftop terrace overlooking Place Moulay Hassan. Good tagines, fresh juices, and the best people-watching in the city. Get there before 1:00 pm.
Restaurant Elizir (Dinner, if staying overnight): One of Essaouira's most reliable restaurants — Moroccan-Italian fusion inside a beautiful riad. Book ahead.
The Wind: What Nobody Warns You About
Essaouira is nicknamed "the Windy City of Africa" for good reason. The *alizé* (trade wind) blows almost constantly from the north, particularly from May through September. In June–August it can be strong enough to make walking difficult and will cover your lunch with sand if you are not sitting in a sheltered corner.
Practical adjustment: Bring a light jacket or long sleeves even in summer. The wind chill factor is significant. Hold onto any hats. Enjoy the fact that Essaouira is genuinely cooler than the rest of Morocco in summer — one reason Marrakechis have long come here to escape the heat.
Practical Tips
- Start the medina walk early (10:00–11:30 am) before the day warms up and shops get busy
- The ramparts are free to walk — follow signs for "Skala de la Ville" (north wall) and "Skala du Port" (sea wall)
- ATMs are available on the main square (Place Moulay Hassan) and the street behind it
- Parking is outside the medina walls — if driving independently, use the car park near the fishing port entrance
- Shops close 1:00–3:00 pm for the midday break; plan your shopping for morning or late afternoon
