The quickest route from Agadir to the desert does not go through Marrakech. It heads east through Taroudant and Taznakht, entering the Draa Valley from the south — Morocco's longest oasis, a ribbon of date palms, ancient kasbahs, and Berber settlements stretching 200 km through the pre-Saharan south. Zagora's dunes are quieter than Merzouga, the atmosphere is more intimate, and after a night in a traditional Berber camp listening to music under an immense black sky, the drive back feels entirely worth it.
Pick-up from your Agadir hotel at 7:30 am. Drive east to Taroudant — walk the 16th-century ochre ramparts and the Berber market. Continue to Taznakht, the Berber carpet-weaving capital. Enter the Draa Valley from the west and follow it south through date palm groves and ancient villages to Zagora. Arrive the desert camp in time for a sunset camel ride on the dunes. Traditional Berber dinner and music under the stars.
