Overview

Two days to the desert and back. Zagora offers a genuine Saharan experience — camel treks, a night in a Berber camp, and a vast star-filled sky — without the longer drive to Merzouga. The route through the Draa Valley is one of the most beautiful in Morocco: 200 km of date palm oasis, ancient kasbahs, and Berber villages lining the river. The dunes at Erg Lehoudi are quieter and less crowded than Erg Chebbi, making this the perfect trip for travellers with limited time who still want the full desert experience.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Pick-up from your Marrakech accommodation at 7:00 am. Cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass and stop at the UNESCO Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou. Lunch in Ouarzazate. Drive south through the full length of the Draa Valley oasis — palm groves, mud-brick villages, and ancient granary kasbahs lining the road. Stop at Tamegroute to see the 14th-century library and famous green pottery workshops. Arrive the desert camp near Zagora by late afternoon. Mount a camel for the sunset ride across the dunes. Traditional Berber dinner and music around the campfire.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zagora the full Sahara or a closer desert?
Zagora is the nearer desert option from Marrakech, reachable in a two-day trip. It offers a genuine camp night and camel trek without the longer drive to the big Erg Chebbi dunes.
What is the desert night like?
One night in a Berber desert camp with dinner and breakfast, reached by a sunset camel trek. Nights get cold outside summer, so bring a warm layer.
What is included?
Air-conditioned minibus transport, an English-speaking driver-guide, one night at the Berber camp with dinner and breakfast, the sunset camel trek, and mineral water and tea. Lunches on both days, personal travel insurance, and tips are not included.
How demanding is it?
Easy — the distance is covered by minibus and the camel trek is short.
Why choose Zagora over Merzouga?
Distance. Zagora is reachable in a single day's drive from Marrakech, so two days is enough; Merzouga needs three. The trade-off is the dunes — Zagora's are smaller and the landscape is more stony desert than the tall Erg Chebbi sand people picture. If you have three days, Merzouga is the bigger view. If you have two, Zagora is the honest answer.
What are the camp facilities?
Bathroom tents with running water and a shower, beds with blankets, and dinner and breakfast included. There is generator power in the evening. It is a straightforward desert camp rather than a luxury one, which is reflected in the price.
How long is the drive?
About seven hours each way, over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and down through the Draa Valley palm groves. It is a full driving day in each direction, which is the honest shape of a two-day desert trip from Marrakech.
Do we ride camels?
Yes, a short ride into the camp at sunset, and it is optional — walking the same stretch is common. The ride is around an hour, which is comfortable for most people who have never been on a camel.

Booking platforms charge operators 25–40% commission. Booking direct means the money stays with the family and the guides who walk with you — and you deal with the people running the trek, not a call centre.
