Why does this trip take three days?

Because Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are on the far side of the Atlas. Three days is what the distance requires — anything shorter either goes somewhere that is not the real Sahara, or spends almost all of it driving.

What do we see on the drive?

The route crosses the Tizi n'Tichka pass and takes in Aït Ben Haddou and the gorge country, so the journey carries its own sights rather than being time lost getting somewhere. The driving is broken into stages with stops rather than done in one push.

What is the night in the desert camp like?

Beds with blankets in a tent, dinner together, and complete quiet once the generators stop. The dunes are genuinely dark, which is why most people remember the night sky rather than the camel ride. Bring a warm layer — desert nights get cold outside summer.

Do I have to ride a camel?

No. The camel leg into the camp is short and optional, and walking that stretch instead is common enough that the guides expect it. All the real distance is covered by vehicle.

How much driving is there each day?

Day one is the long one: roughly six to seven hours from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, broken by stops at Aït Ben Haddou and lunch. Day two is gentler, around four to five hours through the gorge country to Merzouga. Day three is the return leg, and the longest single stretch — we take the western road through Alnif and Tazarine, which is quieter than the way you came in.

What are the toilet and shower facilities like at the camp?

The permanent camps we use have bathroom tents with running water and a real shower — private or shared depending on the camp. Water pressure in the middle of the Erg is modest and hot water is not guaranteed at every hour, but it is a proper shower rather than a bucket. If an en-suite tent matters to you, say so when you book and we will quote a camp that has them.

Can I charge my phone in the desert?

There is power at the camp in the evening from a generator, so a phone or camera battery will charge. It goes off at night, which is deliberate — the quiet and the dark are most of the point. Bring a power bank if you rely on your phone for photographs.

What happens to my main luggage?

Accepted Answer

It stays in the 4x4. You only carry a small daypack on the camel leg into the camp, so pack an overnight layer, a torch and anything you need before morning into that bag. The vehicle is with our driver throughout.

How cold does it get at night?

Accepted Answer

Colder than people expect. Spring and autumn nights in the dunes sit around 12–18 °C; in December and January they can drop to near freezing. The camp provides blankets, but bring a warm layer for the evening — the temperature falls fast once the sun goes down.

Is this suitable for children?

Yes, and families book it regularly. The camel ride is short and optional, the walking is minimal, and the itinerary is graded easy. The long driving days are the real consideration with young children rather than anything about the desert itself.
