Agadir is 450 km from the nearest real dunes, which changes the maths completely. Here is what a desert trip from the coast costs in 2026, and why the 2-day version is mostly driving.
The distance decides the price
Agadir is on the Atlantic coast. The nearest genuine dune sea, Erg Chegaga, is about
450 km inland via Tata and Foum Zguid. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga — the one in most Morocco
photographs — is around 700 km away.
That single fact shapes every desert itinerary from Agadir, and it is why a coastal
desert trip costs differently from the same trip out of Marrakech.
| Route | Price pp | Nights | Reaches |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2-day Erg Chegaga | €195 | 1 (camp) | Erg Chegaga |
| 3-day Erg Chegaga, private | €345 | 2 (both camp) | Erg Chegaga |
| 4-day Erg Chebbi | €420 | 3 (hotel + camp + hotel) | Merzouga |
The 2-day trip, honestly
€195 buys 4x4 transport, an experienced desert guide, one night in a luxury desert camp
with dinner and breakfast, and all camel rides.
What it also involves is roughly 8 hours of driving each way. Day one departs Agadir
at 6:30 am, runs south through the Anti-Atlas foothills via Tata, crosses the hammada to
Foum Zguid, and reaches the dunes for a sunset camel trek. Day two is a dawn camel trek,
breakfast at camp, then the drive north through the Draa Valley palm groves back to
Agadir.
That is a genuine desert night. It is not a leisurely trip, and anyone selling it as one
is not being straight with you. If the driving sounds like too much, the honest advice is
to take the 3-day rather than to expect the 2-day to feel different.
Why the 3-day costs €150 more
The 3-day route is €345 against €195, which looks
steep for one extra day. Three things change:
- Two nights at Erg Chegaga rather than one, so the driving is amortised over more desert time
- Private 4x4 with an off-road guide, rather than shared transport
- Smaller group — 2–8 rather than 2–10
Per hour actually spent in the dunes, the 3-day is considerably better value. The 2-day is
better value only if your constraint is time rather than money.
The 4-day to Merzouga
€420, and the only Agadir route that reaches Erg Chebbi. Three nights: a hotel in the
Dades Valley, a Berber camp at Erg Chebbi, and a hotel in Ouarzazate. Sunset and sunrise
camel treks, mineral water and mint tea throughout, and a bilingual driver-guide.
Erg Chebbi's dunes are higher and the erg is larger than Chegaga's. Whether that justifies
€225 over the 2-day depends on how much a specific dune sea matters to you — both are real
Sahara, and Chegaga is markedly quieter.
What is excluded, by route
| 2-day | 4-day | |
|---|---|---|
| Lunches | Day 1 only | All days, €12–15 each |
| Atlas Film Studios | n/a | Optional, ~€7 |
| Alcohol | — | Not included |
| Travel insurance | Not included | Not included |
| Tips | Not included | Not included |
Budget lunches realistically: on the 4-day that is three or four meals at €12–15, so
€40–60 per person on top of the headline price.
Agadir or Marrakech as your base?
If the desert is your main objective, Marrakech is closer to both ergs and has more
departures. If you are already on the coast for the beaches or the surf, the Agadir routes
save you a 3-hour transfer each way. We compare the two bases in
Where the money goes
Platform commission runs 25–40%. On a €345 trip that is up to €138 leaving Morocco —
more than the camp and the camel handlers earn between them. Booking direct with any
Moroccan operator keeps it with the people running the camp.
