Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chegaga: Which Sahara Dunes?

Most Morocco desert content treats "the Sahara" as one destination. It is not. Morocco has two major sand seas that offer noticeably different experiences, and choosing between them is the most useful decision you can make once you have decided to go.

The difference in one paragraph

Erg Chebbi, at Merzouga, is the famous one: tall, sculpted dunes reachable on surfaced roads, with a well-established cluster of camps. Erg Chegaga, further west beyond M'Hamid, is a much larger dune field reached by 4x4 across open desert, with far fewer camps and far fewer people. Chebbi is more dramatic and easier. Chegaga is emptier and harder.

Erg Chebbi: the postcard dunes

These are the dunes in the photographs. Erg Chebbi covers roughly 170 square kilometres — around 28 km north to south and 5–7 km east to west — a genuinely compact, contained dune field by Saharan standards, which is part of why it's so accessible: you're never far from its edge. The dunes rise up to about 150 metres above the surrounding rocky plain, abruptly enough that the transition from flat hamada to full dune sea looks almost artificial, and the dunes shift colour convincingly from dawn through sunset.

Access is straightforward: our three-day Sahara trip is rated easy, with the distance covered by road and only a short camel leg into the camp.

The trade-off is company. Chebbi is the established destination, so there are other camps and other visitors. You are not alone out there, though the dunes are large enough to absorb people better than you might expect.

Choose Chebbi if you want the classic dune landscape, straightforward access, or you are travelling with people for whom rough transfers would be a problem.

Erg Chegaga: the remote one

Chegaga is Morocco's largest erg, covering roughly 35 by 15 kilometres — a considerably bigger footprint than Chebbi, though with a lower, more rolling dune profile rather than Chebbi's abrupt sculpted peaks. It reads as vast rather than sculptural — a sand sea rather than a wall of dunes, sitting around 56 kilometres southwest of the small town of M'Hamid El Ghizlane, itself already well beyond where the paved road ends.

The defining feature is remoteness. The final approach is 4x4 across open desert, and the camps out there are sparse enough that you can genuinely see none but your own. Choose Chegaga if solitude is the thing you are actually seeking, and you are happy to trade some comfort and convenience to get it.

Which should you book?

Ask what would disappoint you more: sharing the view, or spending a rough few hours getting somewhere.

If sharing the view would spoil it, go to Chegaga. If the rough transfer would, go to Chebbi. Both are the real Sahara, and neither is a consolation prize.
