Overview

Erg Chegaga is the Sahara that most tourists never find. Unlike Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — where camel trains file past each other in view of hotels — Chegaga requires an off-road 4x4 journey beyond the end of the tarmac at M'Hamid, the last village before the true Sahara. The dune field stretches for kilometres with barely another soul in sight. Three days from Marrakech through Aït Ben Haddou, the Saffron Valley of Taliouine, and the edge of the known world — then two nights deep in the desert where silence is the only sound.

Frequently asked questions

How is Erg Chegaga different from Merzouga?
Chegaga is remoter and quieter. The dune field is wider but lower than Erg Chebbi, and the final approach is by 4x4 across open desert rather than surfaced road. You may see no other camp at all, which is the entire reason to choose it.
Why is this trip rated moderate rather than easy?
The access. Reaching Chegaga means a 4x4 transfer across open desert, which is rougher going than the road route to Merzouga. The walking itself is not demanding — the rating reflects the journey rather than the effort.
Is Erg Chegaga worth the extra effort over Merzouga?
If solitude is what you are actually after, yes. If you want the tall sculpted dunes from the photographs with straightforward access, Merzouga is the better use of the same three days. Neither is a consolation prize; they are different experiences.
How is Erg Chegaga different from Erg Chebbi?
Chegaga is larger, wilder and much harder to reach — the last stretch is off-road across the reg, and there is no town at the edge of it. Erg Chebbi at Merzouga has a road to the dunes and far more camps. If you want the emptier of the two and do not mind the rougher approach, Chegaga is the one.
Do I need a 4x4 for this, and is the off-road section difficult?
Yes, and it is included. The final approach to Chegaga is genuine off-road driving across stony desert, which is why this tour costs more than a Merzouga trip of the same length. Our drivers run it routinely; for passengers it is a bumpy hour, not a technical one.
What are the camp facilities out at Chegaga?
Simpler than Merzouga, because everything has to be brought in across the reg. Bathroom tents with running water, beds with blankets, dinner and breakfast. That remoteness is the reason the night sky there is what it is.
How cold does it get at night?
Around 12–18 °C on spring and autumn nights, and near freezing in midwinter. Blankets are provided, and a warm evening layer is worth packing in any season.
