Marrakech to Chefchaouen is 580 km and most of Morocco's interior. Here is what the drive, the stops and the nights cost — including the return leg nobody budgets for.
The distance is the cost
Chefchaouen is 580 km from Marrakech — roughly 8–9 hours of driving before you stop
anywhere. That single fact drives every other number on this page, and it is why the
question "how much is a day trip to Chefchaouen from Marrakech?" has no good answer.
There is no such thing.
Our 4-day private tour is €340 per person
and covers the route via Fes, Volubilis and Meknes.
What the package includes
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|
| Private 4x4 transport throughout | Lunches and dinners |
| English/French-speaking guide | Tips |
| 3 nights riad accommodation | Return transport from Chefchaouen |
| Breakfast daily | |
| All transfers and tolls |
That third exclusion deserves its own section, because it is the one that catches people
out.
The return leg nobody budgets for
The tour ends in Chefchaouen. You are then 580 km from where you started.
This is normal for the route — almost every operator runs it one-way, because driving
back the way you came wastes two days of a trip. But it means your real budget has a line
item after the tour price:
- Bus to Fes or Tangier — cheapest, and both cities have onward connections
- Domestic flight from Tangier or Fes back to Marrakech — fastest
- Private transfer — most expensive, most flexible
Plan this before you book. Arriving in the Blue City delighted and then discovering you
have no way home is a bad end to a good trip.
Why the route goes via Fes
The direct road is not the interesting one. The standard itinerary crosses the Middle
Atlas, stops at Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest for the Barbary macaques, then
gives a full day to Fes el-Bali — the Chouara tanneries, Al-Qarawiyyin, Medersa Bou
Inania — before continuing through Volubilis, Morocco's best-preserved Roman ruins,
and Meknes.
Those stops are the argument for driving rather than flying. If you only want
Chefchaouen itself, fly to Tangier and take a bus down; it is faster and cheaper. The
overland route is worth the money when you want the three cities between.
Doing it independently
Realistic and cheaper, with trade-offs:
By bus. CTM and Supratours cover Marrakech–Fes–Chefchaouen, usually with a change.
Substantially cheaper than a private vehicle. You lose Volubilis, Meknes and the cedar
forest, because they are not on the bus network in any convenient way.
By hire car. Gives you the stops back. Costs fuel, tolls, insurance and four days of
rental, plus the problem of returning the car 580 km from where you collected it — most
Moroccan agencies charge a significant one-way fee.
Accommodation. Riads in Fes and Chefchaouen span a very wide range. Three nights is
the minimum for the route; two makes it a driving marathon.
Where the money goes
Platform commission of 25–40% on a €340 tour is up to €136 — money that does not reach
the driver, the guide in Fes, or the riads. Booking direct with any Moroccan operator
keeps it in the country.
The short version
Chefchaouen from Marrakech is a four-day commitment, not a day trip, and the honest
budget has two parts: the tour itself, and getting home from the far end of the country.
If you want the Blue City and nothing else, fly. If you want Fes, Volubilis, Meknes and
the cedar forest along the way, the overland route earns its cost.
