Overview

This three-day route takes the quieter, more beautiful back way to Toubkal. Instead of the direct Aït Mizane valley, you trek into the wild Azzaden Valley, past the Ighouliden waterfalls and the Azib Tamsoult meadows, then cross the dramatic Aguelzim Pass (3,560 m) to reach the Toubkal Refuge. The final day is the summit push. It is a more rewarding and scenic approach than the standard route, with real high-mountain variety. Note: the Aguelzim pass is only passable roughly May–October.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Transfer from Marrakech to Imlil. Trek over the Tizi n'Mzik pass (2,450 m) into the Azzaden Valley, past the Ighouliden waterfalls to the refuge near Azib Tamsoult. Around 6 hours.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is this compared with the standard Toubkal route?
It is graded challenging. The difficulty is not technical climbing but the high Aguelzim Pass (3,560 m) on the approach plus the summit at 4,167 m, so altitude is the main test. It is a more scenic, quieter way in.
Where do we stay?
Two nights in mountain refuges — working huts with shared bunks, blankets, and communal meals. Bring a sleeping bag liner and head torch.
Do I carry all my gear?
No — a mule porter carries the group gear, so you carry only a daypack. Personal trekking equipment is your own.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes, it is mandatory for this trek and not included. Tips for the guide and porter are also not included.
