Overview

Short on time but determined to stand on the highest point in North Africa? The 2-day Toubkal ascent is the most direct route to the summit. Drive from Marrakech to Imlil, trek up to the Toubkal Refuge past the Sidi Chamharouch shrine on day one, then make the pre-dawn summit push on day two before descending all the way back to Marrakech. It is demanding — with no acclimatisation day — so a good level of fitness is essential, but it delivers the whole Toubkal experience in a single weekend.

Early transfer from Marrakech to Imlil (1h30). Trek up the Aït Mizane valley past the Sidi Chamharouch shrine to the Toubkal Refuge. 4–5 hours walking. Dinner and early night.

Frequently asked questions

Is two days really enough to climb Toubkal?
It is enough to summit, and fit walkers do it regularly. What it does not give you is time to acclimatise — you go from Marrakech to 4,167 metres in around thirty hours. If you have hillwalking experience and a tight schedule it works; for a first time at altitude the 4-day is the safer choice.
What does day one involve?
An early transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, about an hour and a half, then four to five hours walking up the Aït Mizane valley past the Sidi Chamharouch shrine to the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 metres. Dinner at the refuge and an early night before the summit start.
How hard is the descent?
Longer than people expect. After the summit you come back down to the refuge and continue to Imlil — four to five hours of descent in total, on loose ground, on tired legs. This is where knees complain, and it is worth training for specifically.
Can I do this trek in winter?
Only with winter equipment and a guide qualified for those conditions. From roughly November to March the upper route is snow-covered and requires crampons, an ice axe and the skills to use them. It becomes a mountaineering trip rather than a walk.
