Overview

This is Morocco's two headline experiences combined into a single, well-paced week: the highest summit in North Africa and the great dunes of the Sahara, back to back. The first two days climb Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m) from the Berber trailhead village of Imlil, with a refuge night at 3,207 m and a sunrise summit. Then, rather than returning to a hotel and starting again, you cross the High Atlas by road to the desert — through Aït Ben Haddou and the gorge country — for two nights that finish on the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, with a camel trek and a night in a desert camp. Day-by-Day Itinerary

Morning transfer from Marrakech to Imlil (1,740 m), about 90 minutes, where you meet your mountain guide. Trek up the Mizane valley past the Sidi Chamharouch shrine to the Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m) — roughly 5 hours with a mule carrying the bags. Afternoon acclimatisation walk above the refuge, early dinner, and an early night before summit day.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for the Toubkal and Sahara combo?
The trek half is graded challenging: two mountain days with a pre-dawn summit push at 4,167 m, so you need to be a fit, regular walker comfortable at altitude. The desert half is easy and vehicle-based, so it acts as a rest after the summit. If you can manage a hard two-day mountain trek, the rest of the trip is comfortable.
Why do Toubkal first and the desert second?
The summit is the physically demanding part, so it goes first while you are fresh, and the desert days — mostly driving with short walks and camel rides — become a natural wind-down afterwards. It also means the toughest weather variable (the summit) is dealt with early in the trip.
Where do we sleep across the five days?
One night in the Toubkal Refuge (a shared mountain hut at 3,207 m), one night in an Imlil village guesthouse, one night in a Dades Valley hotel, and one night in a Berber desert camp on the Erg Chebbi dunes. A sleeping bag liner is worth bringing for the refuge and camp.
Is this a private tour?
Yes. It runs privately for your party of 2–10, with a licensed mountain guide for the trek and a dedicated driver-guide and vehicle for the desert leg. You are not joined to other groups.
Can the 5-day combo run in winter?
Yes, but the Toubkal summit becomes a snow climb from roughly November to March, needing crampons and an ice axe (rental available) and a bit more mountain experience. The desert leg runs year-round; winter desert nights are cold, so pack warm layers.
