Gite Panorama sits on the hillside above Imlil village, an hour's drive south of Marrakech into the High Atlas. It is our family's gite — Aitidar-owned, Aitidar-run — and it is where every Marrakech Eco Tours expedition to Toubkal and the surrounding massif begins and ends.

We are not impartial. But we are honest: what happens the night before a serious trek matters more than most people expect.

Imlil: The Last Village Before the Mountain

Imlil sits at 1,740 m, at the confluence of the Mizane and Rhirhaia river valleys. The surrounding peaks reach above 4,000 m. On a clear afternoon you can see the summit of Toubkal — North Africa's highest point — from the gite terrace.

The village itself is small: a main lane of gites, mule handlers, equipment shops, and a few cafes that open at five in the morning because they know when trekkers leave. There is no motorised traffic beyond the car park at the edge of the trail system. The air is different here — cooler, thinner, and genuinely quiet after the Marrakech medina.

Mules, not vehicles, are what actually move gear beyond this point, and that is not a quaint detail — it is the logistics of the entire mountain. Every refuge stay, every multi-day trek, depends on mule teams carrying tents, food and baggage up trails no vehicle could manage, run by local muleteers whose families have worked this exact route for generations, often alongside the same guiding families. Watching a loaded mule train head up the valley at first light, ahead of the trekking groups, is as much a part of an Imlil morning as the mountain view itself.

What Gite Panorama Offers

The gite is built in traditional High Atlas style — stone walls, terrace rooms, views that open toward the massif. Facilities are straightforward and honest:

Accommodation: Private and dormitory rooms, all with mountain views. Clean bedding, solid mattresses. You are here to sleep well before a hard day, not to Instagram a lobby.

Food: A traditional Moroccan dinner each evening — harira, tagine, fresh bread, mint tea — and a solid breakfast: coffee, msemen, honey, olive oil, eggs, and enough to fuel you until the mountain refuge. Our cooks have been feeding trekkers for decades. They know the portions.

Terrace: The view from the terrace at sunset, with the Atlas turning from brown to deep rose, is worth the drive from Marrakech alone. This is where most groups have their pre-trek briefing with the guide.

Kit storage: Locked storage for anything you're leaving behind during the trek. No need to bring the whole bag up the mountain.

Wi-Fi: Available in the common areas. We suggest using the evening for rest, not screens — but the connection is there.

Why the Night Before Matters

A Toubkal summit attempt leaves before dawn — typically 4:30–5:00 am to catch the summit before afternoon weather builds and to descend before fatigue sets in seriously. That means sleep matters. It means not arriving in Imlil at midnight from a long flight, eating nothing, and expecting to perform at altitude the next morning.

We build one full evening in Imlil into every Toubkal itinerary for this reason. Arrive in the afternoon. Walk the village. Eat dinner with your guide, who will brief you on the route, the weather forecast, and what to expect at each stage. Sleep. Wake before light. Walk.

The trekkers who have the best summit experiences are almost always the ones who took the evening seriously.

Getting to Imlil

From Marrakech, Imlil is approximately 60 km — about 90 minutes by road through the foothills of the Atlas, passing through Asni. Our transfers depart from central Marrakech and include a stop for any last-minute supplies.

There is no public bus to Imlil that connects reliably to trekking departure times. Grand taxis from Asni exist but require coordination. Our transfer is included in all Toubkal tour packages.

Pricing

Accommodation at Gite Panorama is included in the cost of all Marrakech Eco Tours Toubkal packages. For travellers arranging their own way to Imlil, the gite accepts independent bookings — typically €15–25 per person per night including dinner and breakfast, depending on season and room type.

A Note on the Family

Gite Panorama is the base our father Lahsen built when he was among the first licensed Berber guides operating in the High Atlas. Smail and Mohamed grew up here — learning the mountain from the gate of this gite, walking the trails before they could name them, training under a man who had memorised every route by walking it hundreds of times.

The gite is not a hotel. It is a working mountain operation that has been in one family for more than 30 years. That continuity is what makes it the right starting point for a serious mountain experience.
