For once the self-organised option genuinely is cheaper — and it is worth being
honest about why, and about what you give up.
What the trek involves
Three valleys — Imlil, Azzaden and the Ourika watershed — linked over
Berber passes, with two nights in different village guesthouses. No summit, no
refuge, no altitude night. The highest point is about 2,300 m at Tacheddirt.

Why the gap is real but small
Over three days the guide is 1,500–2,400 MAD, the mule 750–900, two guesthouse
nights 800–1,200 for a pair, and the transfers 1,000–1,700 — because you finish in
a different valley from where you started, which people routinely forget when
budgeting.
That is the honest arithmetic: at the bottom of every range, two people can do this
for a little less than the package. At the top of the ranges, they cannot.
What the package buys that the arithmetic hides
The guesthouses on this route are family homes, not listed businesses. There is
no booking page for the house in Tacheddirt. The route between Azzaden and the
Ourika watershed has no signage and several plausible-looking wrong turns.
So the guide is not an add-on to a trip you could otherwise assemble — for most
visitors the guide *is* how the route and the beds come into existence. That is
different from Toubkal, where the refuge takes bookings and the trail is obvious.

summit push with a refuge bunk room, not a walk between villages. These are
different holidays, not different price points for the same one.
