Overview

The Azzaden is the valley next door to the busy Imlil–Toubkal corridor, and it stays far quieter for it. Over two days you cross the Tizi Mzik pass (2,684 m) with the whole Toubkal massif opening up behind you, drop through juniper forest into the string of villages along the Azzaden river, and spend a night in a family-run guesthouse in Tizi Oussem. The second day traverses the Tizi Oudid pass and descends through terraced hamlets to Aguersioual. No technical ground, no altitude extremes — just a proper taste of Berber mountain life in two days from Marrakech.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Morning transfer from Marrakech to Imlil (1h30). Trek up to the Tizi Mzik pass (2,684 m) for lunch with views back over the Imlil valley and the Toubkal peaks, then descend through juniper forest into the Azzaden Valley to the village of Tizi Oussem. Around 6 hours walking. Dinner and overnight in a Berber guesthouse.

How fit do I need to be for the Azzaden trek?
It is graded moderate: two days with roughly 5–6 hours of walking each, crossing passes up to 2,684 m. There is no technical climbing, but you should be comfortable on uphill and downhill trails for several hours. It suits reasonably active walkers rather than complete beginners.
How is this different from the Toubkal treks?
The Azzaden is the valley beside the main Imlil–Toubkal route, so it sees far fewer trekkers. You get the same Berber villages, passes and mountain scenery, but no summit push and no high-altitude refuge night — a gentler, quieter alternative.
Where do we sleep?
One night in a family-run Berber guesthouse in Tizi Oussem village — a real home rather than a hotel, with dinner and breakfast included. Rooms are simple and shared bathrooms are the norm.
Do I carry my own luggage?
No. A mule carries the group's main luggage between Imlil and the village, so you walk with just a daypack for water, layers and a camera.
