Overview

This is the Sahara on foot. Not an hour on a camel at sunset, but six full days walking beside a caravan that carries the camp, from the last palms of the Draa Valley across the hamada to the 50 km dune sea at Erg Chegaga and out to M’hamid. You walk roughly five to seven hours a day at the caravan’s pace, which is slower than yours. The camels carry the tents, the food and the water; you carry a day pack. Each night the crew makes camp wherever the day ended — a different place every time, with no facilities and no other travellers, because a mobile camp cannot be booked by anyone else. The two ends are vehicle days: Marrakech over the Tizi n’Tichka to the Draa, and M’hamid back to Marrakech. Everything between is walking, and there is no road on that section to change your mind on. Graded moderate rather than hard: the terrain is flat and the altitude negligible, but the consecutive days and the sand make it a real trek. If you have walked a multi-day route before, you are ready for this.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Arrive in Marrakech and settle into the hotel. Your guide meets you in the evening to run through the route, check kit and answer the questions everyone has before a first desert crossing. If you land early there is time for the medina.

Frequently asked questions

Do I ride the camel or walk?
You walk. The camels carry the tents, food, water and your luggage — you carry only a day pack. That is what makes this a trek rather than a camel ride. If you would rather ride part of the way, a riding camel can be added for about €20 per camel per day, arranged before departure.
How hard is it, really?
Moderate. You walk five to seven hours a day for six consecutive days, but the ground is flat, there is no altitude, and the caravan sets a slow pace. The difficulty is the repetition and the sand rather than any single hard day. Anyone who has done a multi-day walking route before will manage it comfortably.
What are the camps like?
Mobile and basic, which is the point. The crew pitches traditional Berber tents wherever the day ends, so it is a different site every night, with no fixed structures, no electricity and no washblock — a toilet tent is set up at each camp. In exchange you sleep somewhere no vehicle can reach and where no other group is staying.
Is there a minimum number of people?
Yes — two. Trips longer than seven days need a minimum of two travellers to run, because a full camel crew, guide and cook go out regardless of headcount. The per-person price falls sharply as the group grows: €1,040 each for two, €790 each for four and €695 each from five upwards.
When is the best time to go?
October to May. Summer in this part of the Sahara reaches temperatures that make multi-day walking genuinely unsafe, so we do not run the trek from June to September. The clearest, coldest nights — and the best stars — are December through February, when a warm sleeping bag matters.
How is this different from your 3-day Erg Chegaga tour?
The [3-day tour](/en/tours/erg-chegaga-3day-marrakech) reaches the same dunes by 4x4 and stays at a fixed camp, and it is the right choice if you have three days. This is eight days on foot: you approach Chegaga across two days of desert, sleep in a different wild camp each night, and continue through the dunes to M'hamid rather than turning around.
