Overview

This is the great walk of the High Atlas — a genuine range traverse rather than a single-peak trip. Starting in the Aït Bougmez valley, the 'Happy Valley' of terraced fields and earthen villages, you cross the M'Goun massif and stand on its 4,068 m summit, then spend a week and a half moving west through gorges, high plateaus, shepherds' pastures and villages that see almost no outside visitors — including Magdaz, which UNESCO has called Morocco's most beautiful village. The traverse finishes in the Toubkal massif with a summit of Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest point in North Africa, before descending to Imlil. Fifteen days of remote, high, physically demanding trekking with full mule support — the most serious trip we run, and the finest.

Frequently asked questions

How fit and experienced do I need to be for the Grand Traverse?
This is graded expert — the most demanding trip we run. It is fifteen consecutive days of walking, several of them long (8–9 hours), with two 4,000 m summits and high passes. You should already have multi-day trekking experience, be comfortable at altitude, and be prepared for consecutive hard days in remote country. It is not a first big trek.
Which peaks does the traverse summit?
Both of North Africa's highest: M'Goun (4,068 m) early in the route from the Aït Bougmez side, and Jbel Toubkal (4,167 m) near the end. Weather permitting, both summits are part of the standard itinerary rather than optional extras.
Where do we sleep over the fifteen days?
A mix of village gîtes (simple family guesthouses), the Toubkal Refuge, and wild camping on the high plateaus where there are no villages. The crew carries and sets up the camp; you carry only a daypack. A sleeping bag is not provided.
What is the best season for this trek?
Late spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal: the high passes are clear of most snow and the temperatures are workable. In winter the traverse becomes a serious mountaineering undertaking requiring crampons and an ice axe, and some passes may be impassable.
How is the trek supported?
Fully. A licensed high-altitude guide leads, a cook handles all meals, and a mule team carries the gear, food, and camp for the whole traverse. That support is what makes fifteen days in remote high country feasible — you walk with a daypack while the logistics are handled.
