Merzouga Stargazing from Marrakech — 2-Day Dark Sky Desert Tour

This is the shortest way from Marrakech to a properly dark desert sky. After the sunset camel trek and dinner, the evening is yours at camp under one of the darkest skies in North Africa. There is no telescope and no guided session; on a clear night you do not need either, because the Milky Way, the brighter planets and the constellations are all there to the naked eye.

The reason it works at Erg Chebbi specifically is distance from anything electric. There is no city glow in any direction, so the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night — not as a faint smudge but as a structure across the sky. That is rarer than people expect; most of Europe has nowhere left that dark.

The trade is the drive. Erg Chebbi is roughly 560 km and about 8 hours from Marrakech, each way, and this is a two-day trip — so it is one long driving day, one night at camp, and one long driving day back. Day one arrives for the camel trek and dinner; day two is sunrise over the dunes and the return. Anyone who would rather break that up should look at a 3- or 4-day desert itinerary instead.

Included are return transport from Marrakech, the sunset camel trek, the camp night, and dinner and breakfast. Lunch en route is not included, though there are stops, and travel insurance and tips are separate.

Two practical points. Moon phase matters more than season — a full moon washes out the fainter stars, so if the Milky Way is the reason you are coming, book around a new moon. And desert nights are cold from autumn through spring, colder than most visitors plan for; the sky is best from outside, sitting still, well after dark.
