Erg Chebbi sits far enough from any city that the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night — this trip is built around that fact rather than treating it as a bonus. After the sunset camel trek and dinner at camp, a local astronomy guide sets up a telescope and walks the group through the visible planets, constellations, and deep-sky objects, explained in plain language rather than jargon. Best October through May, when the desert night sky is at its clearest and the heat has dropped enough to sit outside comfortably for hours.
Depart Marrakech early, crossing the High Atlas and the Draa Valley to Merzouga. Sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes. Dinner at camp, followed by the guided stargazing session once full darkness falls.
