Overview
Erg Chebbi sits far enough from any city that the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night — this trip is built around that fact rather than treating it as a bonus. After the sunset camel trek and dinner at camp, a local astronomy guide sets up a telescope and walks the group through the visible planets, constellations, and deep-sky objects, explained in plain language rather than jargon. Best October through May, when the desert night sky is at its clearest and the heat has dropped enough to sit outside comfortably for hours.

Do I need my own astronomy knowledge or equipment?
No. The guide provides the telescope and explains everything from scratch — this is designed for complete beginners as much as anyone with an interest in astronomy.
What's the best time of year for this tour?
October through May. The sky is clearest and the desert night is cool enough to sit outside comfortably; summer nights are still starry but far hotter.
What happens if it's cloudy?
Clear skies in Erg Chebbi are the norm outside of rare winter storm systems, but if cloud cover blocks the stargazing session, the camp experience, camel trek, and dinner still go ahead as planned.
What will I actually be able to see?
With no light pollution for tens of kilometres, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye from roughly March to October, along with the major planets and, in a good year, meteor showers. Moon phase matters more than season — a full moon washes out the fainter detail, so check the calendar if the night sky is the reason you are booking.
Is there a telescope, or is this naked-eye?
The dunes are dark enough that most of what makes the night memorable is naked-eye. Bring binoculars if you have them; they show more of the Milky Way's structure than people expect.
Will the camp lights spoil it?
The generator goes off at night, which is deliberate. Once it does, the camp is genuinely dark — that is the whole reason to sleep out there rather than in Merzouga town.
