Merzouga Travel Guide: Gateway to the Erg Chebbi Dunes

When people close their eyes and imagine the Sahara — the tall, rippling, apricot-coloured dunes, the camel silhouettes, the impossible quiet — they're picturing Erg Chebbi, and the village at its feet is Merzouga. It's the most iconic patch of desert in Morocco, and reaching it is a proper journey south through mountains, gorges and oases. This is how to do it, and what to expect when you arrive.

Where Merzouga Is (and Why It's Far)

Merzouga sits in Morocco's southeast, near the Algerian border. It is a long way from anywhere: roughly 8-9 hours from Marrakech and 7-8 from Fes. That distance is not a detail to gloss over — it's the single most important thing to understand about visiting.

The good news: the drive is genuinely spectacular, not dead time. From Marrakech you cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass over the High Atlas, stop at the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou (see our Aït Ben Haddou guide), pass through Ouarzazate, and thread the Todra or Dades gorges before the oases give way to open desert. Most people rightly do it over two days as part of a tour rather than a punishing single drive.

Getting There

• On a multi-day desert tour (recommended). The journey is broken with the right stops, you're not driving, and you arrive relaxed. Our 3-day Sahara tour from Marrakech and Merzouga tour from Agadir are built exactly for this.
• Self-drive. Possible if you're confident on Moroccan roads and happy with two long days each way. You'll still want a local guide for the dunes themselves.
• From Fes. A common alternative route, often paired with an open-jaw trip (into Marrakech, out of Fes) so you never backtrack.

A Night in the Dunes

Here's the part that stays with people. In the late afternoon you leave the vehicle behind and head into Erg Chebbi — by camel in the classic way, or 4x4 if you prefer — as the low sun turns the sand from pale gold to deep orange. Out among the dunes is a Berber camp: tents, rugs, a fire.

Dinner is usually a tagine cooked at the camp; afterwards there's drumming and music, and then the thing nobody's quite ready for — you look up, and with zero light pollution the sky is *absurd*. When to Go

• Spring (Mar-May) & autumn (Sep-Nov): the sweet spot — warm days, cool nights, perfect for camel trekking.
• Summer (Jun-Aug): hot midday, so activity moves to dawn and dusk; nights stay warm and pleasant.
• Winter (Dec-Feb): lovely clear days, but desert nights get properly cold — pack layers and expect a chilly sunrise.
