here — and understanding why explains the whole price.
Mgoun costs differently from Toubkal
On Toubkal you walk to a refuge: a building with beds, a kitchen and a warden.
You pay 300–350 MAD a night and carry almost nothing. The mountain has
infrastructure.
Mgoun does not. For most of the seven days there is no refuge, no road and no shop.
Your accommodation, your food and the person cooking it all travel with you.

Why group size matters more here
The guide, the cook and most of the mule team are fixed costs. They are the same
whether two people walk or eight. On a seven-day trip that is a large sum divided by
however many are sharing it, which is why the trek runs 2–8 people and why a pair
pays proportionally more than a group of six.
This is the opposite of the desert tours, where the vehicle is the main cost and
scales cleanly.

- Emergency satellite communication — there is no phone signal for much of it

Is it worth it against a Toubkal trek?
Different products. The 4-day Toubkal trek at
€350 gets you North Africa's highest summit with a refuge each night and other
trekkers around. Mgoun at €754 gets you seven days where you will likely see no
other tour group at all, sleeping in family homes in villages the road does not
reach.
If the appeal is the summit, take Toubkal. If the appeal is the remoteness, Mgoun is
the one — and the price is what remoteness costs to support.
