Shared Group Tours in Morocco: What You Get for €30

A shared tour is a fixed departure you join rather than commission. The vehicle runs on a set date and route whether or not you book, and you buy a seat on it. That single fact explains everything about the price, the pace and the trade-offs.

For a solo traveller or a couple, shared departures are the cheapest legitimate way to see Morocco by a wide margin. This is what they actually cost and what you give up.

What shared departures cost

Every figure below is our own current price per person.

The multi-day prices include accommodation and camp meals. That is the number that surprises people: €120 covers two nights, dinner and breakfast at the desert camp, a camel trek and roughly 1,300 km of driving.

Why the price does not drop for groups

On our private tours, the per-person price falls steeply with group size — the 3-day Sahara runs €690 for one traveller and €230 each at six, because you are splitting one vehicle and one driver.

Shared departures have a single flat rate with no tiers. The reason is structural: the minibus runs regardless, so there is no vehicle cost for your group to spread. Six friends on a shared departure pay six times one seat. This is worth understanding, because it is exactly what creates the crossover point.

Where private becomes the better buy

Compare the same three-day Merzouga route both ways:

On this route shared stays cheaper at every group size — but look at what the gap buys. At six travellers you are paying roughly €660 more for your own 4x4 and driver-guide, the freedom to stop where you like, and no fixed schedule. Split six ways that is €110 each for a fundamentally different trip.

The short rule: travelling alone or as a couple, book shared. Four or more on a day trip, price the private version — it often wins outright. Four or more on a multi-day trip, decide whether the flexibility is worth roughly €100 each.

What you actually give up

Fixed stops. The itinerary is set. You stop where the schedule says, for as long as the schedule says. If the light is extraordinary over the Dades valley, the minibus does not pull over.

Early starts. Shared departures leave around 7:00 am because the route demands it. There is no negotiating a later start.

The group. Up to sixteen people, of varying punctuality. Most travellers find this a plus — you meet people — but it does mean the day runs at the pace of the slowest person back to the vehicle.

Seat, not vehicle. You cannot ask for the air conditioning to be turned down or the music changed. It is a shared space.

What you do not give up

This is the part operators undersell. On our shared departures the route and the overnight stops are identical to the private tour. Same Tizi n'Tichka pass, same Aït Benhaddou, same Dades and Todra gorges, same camel trek into Erg Chebbi, same camp.

You are not getting a lesser version of the Sahara. You are getting the same Sahara on someone else's schedule.

Which shared trip to pick

One evening free in Marrakech: the Agafay evening at €30. Camel ride at sunset, dinner, fire show, back by 10:30 pm. It is a stone desert, not the Sahara — we say so on the tour page too.

One free day: Essaouira for the Atlantic and a UNESCO medina, or Ouzoud for the 110 m waterfalls and wild macaques.

Two days: Zagora. Honest verdict — the dunes are low and scrubby. It is the right choice only if you cannot spare three days.

Three days: Merzouga. The real sand sea at Erg Chebbi. If you have three days, this is the trip. Merzouga vs Zagora settles the choice properly.

Practical notes

Bring cash for lunches — 100–150 MAD a day covers it. Pack a warm layer for the desert camp regardless of season; the Sahara drops sharply after dark, which catches out most first-timers. What to pack for a desert tour has the full list.

Book multi-day departures ahead in March–May and September–November. Day trips can usually be arranged a day or two out.
